12/6/2023 0 Comments Convert sorcery points![]() Instead of following that progression from the DMG, I worked out a per-level formula that curbs the total spell points a spell point caster gets, as a trade-off for the flexibility that spell points affords, by treating the spell slot progression as granting an slot level equivalent number of points, plus a flat amount equal to the caster's level plus 1. Right now, as-written, the number of spell points at any given level is an exact 1:1 match for the spell point equivalent in spell slots for that level. The game is far enough along that messing with it at this point is probably not worth it, but I did do some number-crunching on how I might change in the future, drawing inspiration from the "lossy" conversion rates that sorcerers normally have built-in for converting spell slots to sorcery points. With spell points, you can pool together what would've been your unused three 2nd-level slots' equivalent in spell points and instead throw down another 3rd- or 4th-level spell. Sorcerers are able to throw down way more higher-level spells (again, 10th-level character, so I'm talking about spell levels 3 through 5 here, not 8 or 9, which are explicitly capped at 1) with spell points than their spell slot-using compatriots, which is especially a problem when those compatriots end their days with unspent spell slots specifically because they didn't have access to spells at that level that would've been useful, and no incentive to upcast their 1st levels to 2nd. However, if you have any other full casters in the party who are not using spell points, it becomes a problem. I haven't felt like I specifically needed to rebalance encounters around it or anything like that. Spell points + sorcerer has a natural thematic synergy that appeals greatly to both me as a DM/worldbuilder and to the player. ![]() I have had a sorcerer player using spell points + sorcery points since very early in one of my ongoing campaigns. Repeating that helps them understand that they can't be as reckless is the sorcerer is not there and it also helps you as a GM remember that you'll have to adjust the difficulty to not TPK them with an encouter similar in difficulty to the ones before Strahd made his move. Remind the players that the Divine Soul Sorcerer is a huge boost to their survivability. PS: if you have a Divine Soul Sorcerer in the party, be prepared for lots of healing. You essentially turn sorcerers into level 1-5 spells spammers, but they lose on the higher level spells department and can end up pretty fast consuming their points if they keep using metamagic to enhance their spells. There might be a need at higher levels to adjust the amount of points they have at their disposal, but keep in mind that if you use those rule they can only cast or upcast only one spell per long rest for each spell level over 5.ĭidn't have the chance to explore the impact on levels higher than 5 because of Strahd, but I'll keep these rules in the future and see how they play out at higher levels if I'll ever have another sorcerer in my game. I made the Spell Points and Sorcery Points into one single pool of points and ruled that their body acts as an arcane focus.
